What is an inbound agent? Chatbots, voice agents and AI demo agents
Short answer
An inbound agent is an AI agent that handles the people who come to you: it answers website visitors' questions, qualifies them on your criteria, books meetings and logs the context in your CRM. Inbound chatbots answer in text, inbound voice agents talk on the phone, and AI demo agents like Karumi combine chat and voice with a live product demo, working like a BDR who knows your product and talks to every visitor at once.
An inbound agent is an AI agent that handles the people who come to you: website visitors, form fills, demo requests and inbound calls. It answers their questions, works out whether they're a fit, books the next step and passes everything to your sales team. Think of it as the first person a buyer talks to, available on every page, at any hour, in their language.
There are three kinds today. Inbound chatbots answer in text. Inbound voice agents call or pick up the phone. And a newer kind, the AI demo agent, does both and then shows the buyer your actual product. That last one is what we build at Karumi, and it works like a BDR who knows your product inside out.
This guide explains what each type does well, where each one stops, and how to pick the right one for your pipeline.
What is an inbound agent?
An inbound agent is software that does the job of an inbound sales development rep (SDR or BDR). It responds to people who already showed interest, instead of reaching out cold.
A good inbound agent does five things:
- Answers questions about your product, pricing model, integrations and security, from your own material
- Qualifies the visitor on your criteria: company size, use case, timeline, current tool
- Routes them: books a meeting with the right rep, sends them to self-serve, or points them to support
- Captures context: what they asked, what they cared about, how interested they were
- Logs it in your CRM so sales picks up where the agent left off
The difference from a contact form is timing. A form asks for details and promises a reply later. An inbound agent replies now, while the visitor is still on your site and still interested.
Why inbound teams are moving to AI agents
Inbound is the most expensive pipeline you have, and most of it leaks.
You paid for the ad click, the content and the SEO. The visitor lands on your site with a question. Then they meet a "Book a demo" form, a calendar two days out, or a chat widget that can only offer a meeting link. Many of them leave before anyone talks to them.
What visitors want first is usually simple. We looked at 619 conversations on the agent on our own website between July and October 2026. Almost half of them opened with some version of "What does this actually do, and how does it work?". Those are questions a BDR answers a hundred times a week, and questions a buyer won't put in a form.
An AI inbound agent fixes three problems at once:
- Speed. Every visitor gets an answer in seconds, not the next business day.
- Capacity. It talks to a hundred visitors at the same time. Your form only lets through as many demos as your team can run.
- Coverage. It works nights, weekends and every time zone, in the visitor's language.
Type 1: Inbound chatbots
An inbound chatbot is the chat window in the corner of a website. The newer ones run on large language models, so they can answer open questions instead of following a decision tree.
What they do well:
- Answer common questions in text, instantly, around the clock
- Collect an email and a few qualifying answers
- Offer a booking link or route to the right team
Where they stop:
- They can tell, but they can't show. A buyer asking "How does reporting work?" gets a paragraph, maybe a link to a help article.
- Most end in the same place: a meeting link. The buyer who wanted to see the product now waits for a call anyway.
- Text is a narrow channel for a complex product. It works for "Do you integrate with HubSpot?" and struggles with "Would this work for our approval process?".
Chatbots are a good fit when your product is simple to explain, or when most inbound questions are about plans, support and logistics.
Type 2: Inbound voice agents
An inbound voice agent talks on the phone. Some answer your sales line. Others call a lead back within a minute of a form fill, which is a big step up from a rep calling the next day.
What they do well:
- Respond to a form fill fast, while the lead is still at their desk
- Hold a natural spoken conversation and qualify along the way
- Book meetings straight into a rep's calendar
Where they stop:
- They can't show the product either. A voice agent can describe a dashboard, but the buyer can't see it.
- They need a phone number first, so they only reach visitors who already filled a form. Everyone who browsed and left is out of reach.
- Many B2B buyers don't want a phone call from a company whose website they visited five minutes ago.
Voice agents are a good fit for high-intent forms where speed to lead matters most, and for markets where buyers expect a call.
Type 3: AI demo agents like Karumi
An AI demo agent combines the chat, the voice and the part neither of the others can do: a live product demo.
Here is what that looks like on a website with Karumi:
- The visitor asks a question in the chat. They aren't ready to book, so they ask, and they get a real answer in about two seconds.
- The agent qualifies them in the conversation. It asks your questions when they fit, and offers answers as tappable chips, not a 10-field form.
- The agent opens a live demo. One click and the chat becomes a video-call style demo. The agent talks, shares its screen and clicks through your real product, starting with what the visitor asked about in the chat.
- Sales gets the context. A summary, an intent score, the transcript and the recording go to your CRM, and the right rep is alerted.
The visitor never waits, never fills a long form, and sees your product before anyone books a meeting. If they want to talk to your team, the agent books it, and your rep walks in knowing what the buyer already saw.

An AI BDR that knows your product
The best way to think about Karumi is as an inbound BDR, with two differences.
It knows the product like a sales engineer. A BDR qualifies and books, then hands the buyer to someone who can actually show the product. Karumi learns your product from a login and your docs, so it can do both in the same conversation. When a buyer asks "Can I filter this by region?", it doesn't promise a follow-up. It opens the report and shows the filter.
It meets every visitor. A BDR team has a capacity limit and office hours. Karumi talks to every visitor who wants to talk, at 3am, on a Sunday, in Spanish or Japanese, all at once.
What it doesn't do is replace your sales team. It hands off. Buyers who are a fit and want to talk get a meeting with a rep. The difference is that the rep now gets a buyer who has already seen the product, with every question written down.
How an inbound agent accelerates pipeline
An inbound agent doesn't create demand. It stops you losing the demand you already have, and it moves it faster.
- More conversations from the same traffic. Visitors who would never fill a form will ask a question in a chat. Each of those is a lead you didn't have before.
- Demos at the moment of interest. A buyer who sees the product today is further along than one who books a call for next Thursday.
- Shorter first calls. Reps skip the discovery basics because the agent already covered them.
- Better qualified meetings. The agent qualifies on depth of interest, not on whether someone typed a job title into a form.
- Insight into what buyers want. Every question is recorded. When forty visitors ask the same thing your homepage doesn't answer, you see it.
How to choose an inbound agent
Start with what your buyers need before they'll talk to sales.
- If they mostly need answers about plans, setup and support, an inbound chatbot is enough.
- If speed to lead on high-intent forms is your main gap, and your buyers pick up the phone, an inbound voice agent helps.
- If they need to see the product to believe it, which is true of most B2B software, you need an agent that can demo. Otherwise every good conversation still ends with "let's book a call".
A few questions to ask any vendor:
- Can it show my product, or only talk about it?
- Does it reach anonymous visitors, or only people who left a phone number?
- Can I define the qualification criteria, or is it a fixed script?
- What exactly lands in my CRM after each conversation?
- How does it hand off to a human, and what does the rep see?
- How do I control what it says and shows?
How to get started with Karumi
Getting an AI inbound agent live on your site with Karumi takes about two weeks, with no engineering work on your side:
- Day 1. You give us a login to a demo environment of your product. That's the whole ask.
- Day 2. Your first agent is live and you can talk to it.
- Weeks 1 to 2. We tune it with you, then it goes on your website.
The fastest way to understand it is to try it. The agent on our website will show you Karumi exactly the way it would show your product to your buyers.
FAQ
What is an inbound agent?
An inbound agent is an AI agent that responds to people who come to you, such as website visitors and form fills. It answers their questions, qualifies them, books meetings and logs everything in your CRM.
What is the difference between an inbound and an outbound agent?
An inbound agent responds to buyers who already showed interest. An outbound agent starts the conversation, for example with cold emails or calls.
Is an inbound agent the same as a chatbot?
No. A chatbot is one type of inbound agent that answers in text. Inbound agents can also work by voice, and AI demo agents like Karumi can show the product live.
Can an AI agent replace an inbound SDR or BDR?
It can take over the repetitive part of the job: first answers, qualification and booking, for every visitor at once. Most teams keep their reps for the conversations that matter and let the agent make sure no inbound lead goes unanswered.
What is an AI BDR?
An AI BDR is an AI agent that does the work of a business development rep: it engages leads, qualifies them and books meetings. Karumi is an AI BDR for inbound that can also give the product demo.
Does an inbound agent work with my CRM?
Karumi works with HubSpot, Salesforce and Attio, plus Slack, Segment and webhooks. See what Karumi sends to HubSpot after a demo.
Which languages can Karumi speak with visitors?
